
In 2010, the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, or the Telstra Art Award, will celebrate its 27th year and is the longest running art award dedicated to the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. It is considered the premier national event on the Australian Indigenous arts calendar. Open to all adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists, the Award has given hundreds of artists the recognition they deserve and offers economic benefits to their communities.
For 19 years Telstra has supported the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory to showcase the very best of Indigenous art from around Australia and boasts a main prize of up to $40,000.
There are six main prize categories: • The Telstra Award ($40,000)
• Telstra General Painting Award ($4,000)
• Telstra Bark Painting Award ($4,000)
• Telstra Work on Paper Award ($4,000)
• Wandjuk Marika 3D Memorial Award ($4,000) In 2010 a New Media Award will be presented with the theme of ‘connections’. As an emerging category, this award celebrates the increasing number of Indigenous artists using new media as part of their art practice ($3,000).
Rhoda Roberts
Rhoda is the producer for Vibe Australia and she was the founder and Artistic Director of the annual international festival The Dreaming, based at Woodford QLD. She was also a co-founding member of Australia's first national Aboriginal theatre company, the Aboriginal National Theatre Trust (ANTT).
