A variety of stresses, such as coral disease, bleaching, climate change and pollution have adversely affected the Great Barrier Reef. Through the Great Barrier Reef Ocean Observing System, funded by the Federal Government, Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) researchers monitor and measure the health of these famous reef systems in a bid to better understand the threats so they can take appropriate action.
The Great Barrier Reef stretches for thousands of square kilometres parallel to the Queensland coast. AIMS needed to collect and transfer data back to their research facility in Cape Ferguson for analysis, a challenge when you are 70 kilometres offshore with no fixed line infrastructure.
Telstra telemetry has helped to solve these problems by allowing AIMS to use the world's first reef-based mobile network to monitor coral bleaching across the Great Barrier Reef efficiently and effectively.
